Hutong Beijing
Stroll along the narrow lanes of Beijing´s Hutongs.

Amongst the high-rise apartments of modern Beijing are pockets of ancient China in the narrow side alleys known as Hutongs. Here the traditional Beijing courtyard houses still survive, where now only a fraction of Beijingers live.

Look for the outside gates of the courtyards to give you a clue of the status and wealth of the original residents. Stone lions at the base of the doors, knobs on the doors and beams above, all indicate the different rank and status of the residents.
